WHY THIS IS PERSONAL

“After 25 years of pastoring,
I had no retirement plan.”

I had helped churches grow and invested in buildings and ministry. Yet I had made very little preparation for my own family’s future. Learning to put my gifts to work beyond the pulpit changed my outlook—and helped me put a retirement plan in place.

WHY PREPARATION MATTERS

Who Is Preparing
for the Pastor?

Your story is personal. Research shows that financial stress and retirement concerns are shared by many ministers.

76%

Wished they had started earlier

Of ministers surveyed by GuideStone wished they had begun preparing for retirement at a younger age.

GuideStone · 2024 research

GuideStone’s 2024 study surveyed member ministers under age 55 with less than $50,000 held at GuideStone; its findings do not represent all Baptist or nondenominational pastors. The Lifeway figure describes Evangelical and Black Protestant pastors surveyed.

You’ve prepared others for their next season. Who is preparing you for yours?

Let’s talk about your next step

WHY PASTORPRENEURS™ EXISTS

You care for the church.
Your future deserves care, too.

The church’s financial health and the pastor’s financial health are two different things. A paid-off church building does not automatically mean the pastor has retirement savings.

PastorPreneurs™ creates space for pastors and ministers to talk about their households, their gifts, and their financial future—with purpose and practical next steps.

“We can serve God faithfully and plan responsibly.”

A BIBLICAL FOUNDATION

Called to Minister.
Equipped to Work.

ACTS 18:1–4

“Paul moved in with them, and they worked together at their common trade of tentmaking. But every Sabbath he was at the meeting place, doing his best to convince both Jews and Greeks about Jesus.”

Excerpt from Acts 18:1–4 · The Message (MSG)

Acts 18:1–4 shows Paul working as a tentmaker alongside Aquila and Priscilla and teaching about Jesus on the Sabbath.

Paul’s hands worked a trade while his voice proclaimed the Gospel. His example reminds us that practical work can accompany a faithful calling.

PastorPreneurs™ encourages pastors and ministers to steward their gifts, serve faithfully, and prepare responsibly for their future.

Paul’s example opens a conversation about ministry and work. Each minister’s path will reflect their calling, responsibilities, and season of life.

MORE PASTORS. MORE STORIES OF POSSIBILITY.

Bishop Jackson has pastored since 1989 and founded The Kingdom Center in 1997. His commitment to teaching Kingdom principles and serving his community also shapes his work in the marketplace.

After being introduced to the insurance opportunity by Apostle Sharome and Pastor Veronica Gentry, he took time to think, consider, and pray. He became a licensed insurance agent on September 14, 2021, and earned six-figure ring recognition in his first year of business.

He went on to establish Legacy Planning Group with more than 15 agents. For Bishop Jackson, the opportunity has become another way to build relationships, encourage others, and help them pursue success while continuing his ministry.

His guiding Scripture: Philippians 1:6, trusting God to complete the good work He began.

The insurance business has been a tremendous blessing to me and my family, allowing me to create an additional stream of income while continuing to fulfill my calling in ministry.

After more than 36 years of pastoral leadership, I have discovered that ministry and entrepreneurship do not have to compete; they can complement one another.

Insurance has given me the opportunity to serve families beyond the walls of the church, helping them prepare for the future while creating greater financial opportunities for my own family.

I believe pastors should not have to choose between fulfilling their calling and building financial stability for their families. The insurance industry has helped me pursue both with purpose.

As a pastor, I never imagined the insurance industry would become part of my calling, but it’s changing my life.

This work lets me do what I’ve always wanted to do: help people.

I get to help families put protection in place and build real financial wealth, without it bankrupting me to serve them.

And it’s opened a door I didn’t expect. Every week I’m sitting across the table from people who would never walk into my church, and I have the opportunity to share the gospel with them.

For any pastor wondering whether there’s a way to provide for your family and widen your ministry at the same time, I’m living proof that there is.

To any pastor or minister looking for an additional source of income, I encourage you to explore this opportunity. We pour so much into serving others, and there is wisdom in preparing financially for the season when we slow down or step away from full-time ministry.

My name is Hasker Hudgens, Jr., and I pastor The Equipping Church. I’m married to Deanna Hudgens, my partner in ministry, insurance, and life.

I joined the business in December 2024. I decided to give it a try, and I quickly discovered that I enjoyed both the work and the people who make up UBI.

Dr. Ted Wilson, Sr. is a source of inspiration, motivation, and hope for me. Dr. Brad Lucas is an outstanding example of the kind of leader I aspire to become in this business.

This business has been a blessing to me and my family. We have made friends, and some have become like family.

If I had to choose the one thing I love most, it would be the opportunity to earn residual income through the pay-through structure. That is what sold me—the opportunity to build something today that can continue supporting my family in the years ahead.

To any pastor or minister looking for an additional source of income, I encourage you to explore this opportunity. We pour so much into serving others, and there is wisdom in preparing financially for the season when we slow down or step away from full-time ministry.

I’m grateful I gave this business a chance. Come learn what being part of this winning team could mean for you!

THE OPPORTUNITY

Ministry meets the
insurance marketplace.

Serve families. Put your gifts to work. Build with purpose.

PastorPreneurs™ introduces pastors and ministers to the opportunity to become licensed insurance agents. Your experience listening, teaching, and caring for people can support another avenue of service: helping families understand insurance coverage and protect their loved ones.

Licensed agents can earn commissions and, where available, renewal commissions that may provide ongoing income. Put that income toward household needs, retirement preparation, and the legacy you want to build.

Your path to becoming a licensed life insurance agent

For South Carolina residents, here is the starting path. Requirements and costs differ in other states.

  1. Prepare for the exam.Obtain life insurance study materials and prepare for the licensing examination.
  2. Pass the life insurance exam. For this life insurance opportunity, prepare for the life-only exam. South Carolina’s passing score is 70 on the reported scoring scale.
  3. Apply for your license. After passing, submit your application and pay the required fees. Complete fingerprinting and the background-check process as directed by the state. Licensing is subject to approval.
  4. Train and get ready to serve.Complete the required carrier onboarding and appointments. Our UBI boot camp provides practical training in presenting our life insurance products and serving families.

A practical starting point

Our team estimates approximately $170 in initial licensing-related costs. Ask a co-founder for the current breakdown before getting started. Actual costs depend on study materials, fees, and any retakes; business and ongoing expenses may be additional.

Becoming licensed can open the door to building your own insurance business while continuing to serve in ministry.

A lasting need. A meaningful opportunity.

Families need financial protection in every season of life. Life insurance offers an opportunity to serve that need through changing economic conditions. Sales and income can still be affected by the economy and are not guaranteed.

Income depends on sales activity and the applicable compensation agreement. Renewal commissions vary by carrier and product and are not guaranteed.

MEET THE CO-FOUNDERS

A shared vision.
A purposeful partnership.

PastorPreneurs™ was co-founded by Apostle Sharome L. Gentry and Pastor Curtis L. Johnson.

Apostle Sharome L. Gentry

CO-FOUNDER

Apostle Sharome L. Gentry

Bringing ministry and marketplace into a shared conversation about income, retirement, and legacy.

I Was Building the Ministry—but Had No Plan for My Future.

For 36 years, I have preached the Gospel. For 33 years, I have served as a pastor, full-time from the beginning. My salary was not always substantial, but God was always faithful.

Read my story

I watched churches grow and helped build a million-dollar multipurpose facility. During that process, I asked the church not to increase my salary so we could invest in the buildings and ministry. In 2004, I founded what is now The Worship Center, and God has blessed us with tremendous growth.

Yet after 25 years of pastoring, I faced a sobering reality: I had no retirement plan, no health insurance, no 401(k), and little to no savings for my family. I had poured so much into ministry that I had made very little preparation for our future. Sacrificing for the ministry was what I had been taught to do.

For a long time, I thought being faithful to my calling meant giving everything to the ministry, even when little remained for my household. I had to learn that preparing for my family’s future was also an act of stewardship. Exploring another source of income did not mean I loved God or His people any less.

I felt limited—as though pastoring was the only thing I could do. But I began to recognize that the gifts God gave me had value beyond the pulpit.

I have now been in the insurance industry for nine years. In my first eight months, I earned six figures. I have earned six figures every year since, including during the pandemic, while continuing to serve in ministry. Today, I have a retirement plan in place and a different outlook on my family’s future.

These are my personal results; they are not a promise of what someone else will earn.

I am also the author of Called, But Not Confined: A Minister’s Guide to Ministry, Marketplace, Money & Legacy. I wrote it to help pastors and ministers recognize the value of their gifts beyond the pulpit and prepare intentionally for their future.

That is why PastorPreneurs™ matters to me. I want other pastors and ministers to understand this sooner than I did: You can honor your calling and prepare for your family’s future. Both deserve your attention.

Pastor, minister—if you see yourself in my story, let’s have a conversation. You have cared for so many people. Your family and your future deserve care, too.

Pastor Curtis L. Johnson

Serving families in ministry and the marketplace while preparing for the future.

I Answered the Call—but Still Needed a Plan for My Future.

I began preaching in 1990. In 1993, my grandfather, the founder of our church, entrusted the ministry to me. We had about 40–50 members and very limited funds, so I continued working at a grocery warehouse.

Read my story

In 1994, my manager told me I could no longer leave work to preach funerals for church members. I had to choose. Believing I needed to be obedient to my calling, I stepped out on faith and became a full-time pastor, taking a major cut in income. There was no benefits package and no retirement plan—just revivals and love offerings. My wife and I also welcomed two sons into our family.

To supplement my income, I worked at a funeral home, spent 15 years as a radio personality, and served as a nonviolence trainer with the King Center in Atlanta. Those opportunities helped, but none provided real financial security.

From 2007 through 2024, I took no salary increase at the church. The church added medical and life insurance benefits and a housing allowance, but there was still nothing for retirement.

In 2018, I followed Apostle Gentry’s recommendation to consider becoming a life insurance agent. It has made a substantial difference in my income and given me another way to fulfill my passion for serving families. It also gives me the time and flexibility to continue serving as a full-time pastor while preparing for a more comfortable retirement.

That is why I encourage other pastors to consider this opportunity: You can continue answering your calling while taking practical steps toward your family’s financial future.

This is my personal experience. Income and results vary and are not guaranteed.

A FEW IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

Begin with clarity.

Who is PastorPreneurs™ for?

Pastors and ministers who want to explore becoming licensed insurance agents as a way to serve families and build additional income.

Do I have to step away from ministry?

The vision is to serve God faithfully while planning responsibly. Consider opportunities that fit your ministry commitments and family responsibilities.

Where should additional income go?

Start with a purpose: reducing debt, building emergency savings, funding retirement, and protecting your family. Your priorities will depend on your household’s needs.

Do I need an insurance license?

You must complete the applicable licensing and onboarding requirements before working as an agent. For South Carolina residents, begin with exam preparation, pass the life insurance exam, apply for your license, and complete fingerprinting as directed. Our team can discuss costs and UBI boot camp training.

How can I learn more about the opportunity?

Start with a conversation with a co-founder. We can discuss licensing, training, how the work fits around ministry, and your questions about commissions and potential renewal income.

Does additional income come automatically?

No. Opportunities require evaluation, effort, and preparation. Income varies by the opportunity and the work involved; it is not guaranteed.
